Ik ken Ko ruim 30 jaar uit de Zeeuwse muziekscene. Ko en zijn broer Rinus, die jarenlang het blazersduo 'Southside Horns' vormden, namen mij vaak mee op pad. Als (toen nog vooral) altist keek ik op tegen Ko's moddervette tenorsound, in de stijl van de Amerikaanse legendes. Dat viel ook Hans Dulfer op, die Ko regelmatig op het podium riep waar Ko dan bijvoorbeeld 'Yakety Sax' vetter dan het origineel speelde. Friso van Wijck van Amsterdam Winds luisterde bij een gezamelijk bezoek aan zijn winkel met klapperende oren en riep: 'wow, zo moet een tenorsax klinken!' Maar bescheiden als Ko is, heeft hij een solistische carriere nooit uitgebouwd.

Ko is naast uitstekend saxofonist ook kopersmid van beroep en ik durft gerust te zeggen: een van de besten van Europa. Al zal hij zelf bescheiden zeggen dat het wel meevalt.. Mijn Mark VI alt werd ooit omver geschopt op het podium. Terwijl ik dacht dat het instrument verloren was, heeft Ko door engelengeduld, creativiteit en zijn uitzonderlijke gevoel voor het materiaal de sax onzichtbaar weten te repareren. Toen Hans Dulfer aan Ko vroeg zijn favoriete, maar totaal afgesleten Otto Link te restaureren, bracht dat Ko op het idee een replica te maken. Van het een kwam het ander en Ko besloot dit nieuwe ambacht, dat perfect aansluit bij zijn beroep van kopersmid, verder uit te bouwen.

In de beginperiode van deze ontwikkeling trokken we regelmatig samen op om mondstukken te toetsen bij o.a. Joshua Redman, Benjamin Herman en James Carter. Zo nu en dan hielp ik bij het testen van verschillende modellen zodat Ko ze verder kon perfectioneren. Ik ben dan ook in het gelukkige bezit van het eerste echte 'Knock Out' mondstuk, maar Ko heeft intussen al vele andere mondstukken gemaakt voor tenor, alt en bariton.

Inmiddels heeft Ko een behoorlijke naam opgebouwd onder saxofonisten binnen en buiten Nederland. De kwaliteit van zijn 'Knock Out' mondstukken overstijgt by far de standaard modellen van gevestigde producenten. Dit komt vooral doordat Ko maatwerk levert, afgestemd op de individuele blazer. Hij werkt dermate nauwkeurig dat hij elke nuance kan realiseren.

Knock Out mondstukken zijn stuk voor stuk ambachtelijke juweeltjes en dragen bij aan de verfijning van één van de belangrijkste onderdelen van de sax. En daarmee aan het optimaliseren van je geluid en speelplezier. Vakmanschap is meesterschap!'

‘I met Ko in the music scene in Zeeland about 30 years ago. Ko and his brother Rinus had played in their own wind duo ‘Southside Horns’ for years and during that time they took me along with them many times. Back then I played the alto sax and looked up to Ko’s big fat tenor sound, following the style of the American legends. Hans Dulfer noticed it too and used to call Ko up on stage regularly. Ko then played ‘Yakety Sax’ even more ‘fat’ than the original. Friso van Wijck (from Amsterdam Winds) listened to Ko when we visited Ko’s workshop and couldn’t believe his ears. ‘Wow, this is what a tenor saxophone should sound like,’ he exclaimed. However, Ko never expanded his solo career – after all, he’s a modest man. Ko is a great coppersmith as well – one of the best in Europe, if you ask me. My Mark VI alto sax was kicked away on stage once – fortunately, Ko did an amazing job repairing it. I was amazed by the incredible amount of patience, creativity and feeling for the material with which he - invisibly - repaired my saxophone.
After Hans Dulfer asked Ko to repair his favourite but worn Otto Link, Ko came up with the idea of making a replica. He decided to expand this craft, which connected perfectly to his profession of coppersmith. Ko and I used to have mouthpieces tested by, among others, Joshua Redman, Benjamin Herman en James Carter. I can say I am the lucky owner of the very first Knock Out mouthpiece ever. Over the past years, Ko has created many other mouthpieces for tenor, alto and baritone saxophone. Nowadays, Ko is internationally renowned for his quality Knock Out mouthpieces among saxophonists, leaving producers of standard mouthpieces far behind. The reason is Ko’s made to measure technique and his eye for detail, which enables him to realise any nuance. Every single one of Ko’s mouthpieces are true pieces of art and contribute to the refinement of one of the key parts of the saxophone.
